The Covered Bridge Art Association conducts a raffle of art from various member artists each year to help fund an art scholarship for graduating local high school art students in Parke County. This year they have chosen a remarkable piece of photography printed on canvas. The piece is of lilacs in a vase against a pleasing background. Patrons have marveled at how so painterly the piece appears. It is hard to believe it is a photograph!
Malcolm Moore of Montezuma, the photographer, is known as very capable of this quality of work. His parents bought an old worn out Air Stream camper and renovated it into a dark room when Malcolm was in high School. So early on he not only took the picture but also he developed and printed the picture. Having a dark room gave him sole control over the photography process, making it possible to express artistic techniques in the dark room.
After high school Malcolm attended Wabash college before joining the Forest Service in Texas. There he became a geographical photographer, building aerial photograph survey maps for the service during forest fires. This was important work as it allowed the service to make tactical decisions on fighting the fires. He also worked for Vincennes University in the audio visual department and later he became the chief photographer for the Terre Haute Tribune Star.
Eventually Malcolm started his own photography studio in Terre Haute that he ran until his retirement. Since around 2000 he has been a prized member of the art gallery.
This piece will be on display in the gallery until the raffle date of November 4th 2019. Tickets are a $1 per chance and 6 chances for $5. Please stop in and see this piece and say hi!
